Celebrating 10 years of SportCares with Experience SPORTS
SportCares officially kicked off its 10th Year celebrations today with Experience SPORTS!, a three-day sports tryouts event for persons with disabilities (PwDs), held at Heartbeat@Bedok.
The first day of the event saw over 150 participants from 12 organisations such as MINDS Towner Gardens School and Touch Centre for Independent Living (Bukit Merah) taking part in sports such as Boccia, Paracanoe and Football.
This year, SportCares celebrates its 10th year of changing lives through sport with a series of celebratory events that are catered to the different segments that it serves – persons with disabilities (PwDs), children & youth from vulnerable backgrounds, and isolated seniors.
The first of the planned events is Experience SPORTS!, a three-day sports tryouts for PwDs happening on 25, 26 and 28 May 2022. Experience SPORTS! aims to create awareness of sport opportunities that are available for PwDs and to encourage the uptake of such disability sport programmes available in ActiveSG, SportCares, Singapore Disability Sports Council and Special Olympics Singapore. Close to 500 PwDs are expected to participate in various sports tryouts across the three days.
Mr Eric Chua, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, who graced the event as its Guest of Honor, engaged with participants and joined them at the tryouts, cheering them on while they experienced a new sport.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event was Marcus Tan, Chief of Sport Development Group who oversees SportCares, he mentioned, “In celebration of SportCares’ 10th anniversary, Experience SPORTS! brings together coaches, volunteers, and key partners to deliver a series of sports tryouts to create awareness and grow interest in upcoming disability sport programmes and opportunities.
“Over the years, SportCares initiatives, such as Inclusive Sport Festival, Play-Ability, and Play Inclusive have reached out to and benefited over 18,000 persons with disabilities (PwDs). These initiatives have all taken a collaborative approach, allowing us to reach out to and serve the disability segment in a holistic manner.
“We will continue to use sport for social good by collaborating with our partners and constituents to deliver new and relevant opportunities, and strengthen pathways in disability sport, so PwDs of all participation levels can reap the benefits of sport.”
“I didn’t use to do much sports before but I play badminton and bowling now and I feel healthier. I enjoyed the session today because I get to meet with friends and coaches.” said Max David, 32-year-old participant from TOUCH Centre for Independent Living who has intellectual disability.
ActiveSG Football Academy (AFA) Head Coach, Jeremy Chiang, who has been conducting football classes for persons with special needs under AFA, shared his thoughts on the event, “As a coach, I’ve had an enjoyable experience coaching special needs football classes, learning to break down drills so everyone can play, build confidence, learn and improve.
“These disability sport tryouts are very useful in sparking an interest in sports. I’ve seen many participants who become keen to take part up a sport after participating in these tryouts. You can see them having fun and enjoying themselves, and this encourages them to want to do more.”
